I makes me happy...

Fri Aug 3, 2012, 9:20 PM
I am so glad to see that Raw Fractals-category ([link] has grown so much. Many people post their new creations every day here. I started with fractals 6 years ago and sometimes I miss those days with Apophysis. You know, when you dragged that triangle there, and the other one there and voilá - a really neat thing appeared and you saved it.

But looking in to this category - I am so happy to see that there are people that are in that phase I was six years ago.

Some people might try out Ultra Fractal, some might try out Mandelbulb....  or Fractal Explorer... no matter what...  fractal-artists are growing and very fast.

Why?

I have no idea really... I have one thought on it though... I think it has to do with the numbers. All you have to do really is punching a number... no pencil or brushes needed. All you really need to know is how to do it is: 1234567890 and then plus or minus... (now I am talking for UF and APO, no idea how mandelbulb or other programs works).

But essentially - all you need to know is how to use a keyboard and a mouse...

Kind of neat I think....

So way to go fractalists!! We are a growing kind of people!!

I agree! Fractal art is growing in popularity and new artists! I am delighted more people are getting turned on by fractal art. I have been contacted by a number of people in the past who liked some of my art, but had no idea what I was talking about when I said I do "fractal art". I said "in a nutshell, it's creating images using mathematical equations". Then they would say, "I'm not very good at math" and I said, "You don't have to be. I don't understand the math behind what I'm doing, but you need the fractal generating software to do it and a lot of them are free!". I would send them links to Apo and FE for the free ones and pointed them in the direction of some of the resources on the web for the programs. Some have really gotten into fractal art and have even broken down and paid for UltraFractal. I mention it to people because it's such a wonderful program, but I mention that it is not free, so if you're not sure whether or not you'll like fractaling, try the free ones first. That's how I got into it. And the help of the wonderful and generous fractal community on dA has been a huge help to me in my journey to learn how to make fractals. I think the beauty of the images, with it's infinite variations, wonderful color and get lighting play, I'm surprised more people haven't glommed onto fractals yet. But, I think it won't be long before more and more people will appreciate the beauty of this unique artform. Great article, Maria, and thanks for making that point! Sorry for the long ramble, but I'm very happy to see new people getting into the fractaling fray!

I am describing fractals in just the same way and I get the same answer too :) But all you really need to do is how to punch numbers :D

Well that's funny Maria, but the numbers are the part I dislike in fractal programmes. I go by what I see and have never really made any good Apo fractals because of the technical side.
Since I love talking I'll tell you my story.

When I first came to dA in 2007, I had a few digital drawings to post. It was a new hobby.
After a few weeks I discovered fractals and *Rozrr introduced me to Apo then to FE. I liked them immediately for their magical side.
Later I made a club for fractal manipulations with Eva *Xantipa2 but it only lasted six months. It's still there ~FractalManipulations if you are curious.

I started exploring Photoshop. Eva helped me a lot. That's great to play with.

I went back to FE when everyone was making Talis (ducks) formula in autumn 2010. :devpharmagicien made Apo gradients available for FE. That was such an advance and made the programme more interesting for me.

I had tried UF but never understood how to use it.
This spring, F. Slijkerman made UF for Mac and I tried it immediately. To my surprise I could use it and I bought it. I think that Photoshop helped me to understand it because of the layers.
I really like the programme and it' so much faster for a clear fractal than Apo which drove me potty with the long renders. I don't think I shall ever go back to Apo although I like the aspect of flames. It's too long.

I don't watch the fractal category but I'm not surprised that it's growing. Apo is a good way to begin. Dragging the triangles is fun, you are right. :)
